270D: Composition and Style

In this course, students that are at least modestly familiar with their cameras can indulge into a deeper study of what makes for great composition. We delve into the 3 basic foundational cornerstones of good composition and challenge students to seek these out.

  • Start the morning with a basic introduction to balance and elementary composition and immediately engage in some exercises. Students will discuss a photographs, deciding on their various attributes – both good and bad – using the introductory concepts to assist in the exercise.
  • We then move into some more abstract concepts on aesthetics and aesthetic form and venture out into our surroundings to find these forms. These findings will be discussed by students following their return back to class.
     
  • Next, we delve into more intricate understandings of composition and style by comparing, contrasting and grouping photos that are like one another and discussing their inherent similarities in terms of composition and style.
